Dear Parents / Guardians,

California is one of many states transitioning to new, next generation assessments as part of the new educational benchmarks set by the Common Core State Standards. Our students, along with public school students throughout California, will participate in the new the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) during the week of April 27 – May 1, 2015. Students will take the tests in their homeroom class online, using their district issued iPads. The Smarter Balanced Assessments will include a computer adaptive test, classroom activities and performance tasks in both Math and English/Language Arts. In addition, 8th grade students will be administered the Science portion of the CST.

According to LAUSD’s website, “At LAUSD, our focus is on graduating all students college-prepared and career-ready. To help achieve that goal, California is one of many states that transitioned to new assessments called the Smarter Balanced Assessments. The Smarter Balanced Assessments are new, next-generation assessments that will measure the full understanding of the Common Core State Standards in math and English language arts/literacy for students in grades 3-8 and grade 11. The results of these new assessments will be setting a new baseline for progress and achievement -- let’s learn, grow and adapt together.”

With this in mind, we want to encourage all of our students to do their best! Your child's teachers have been preparing students throughout the school year in the classroom. At home, parents can access some grade level field test practice questions by visiting www.caaspp.org, clicking on “Practice & Training Tests,” then “Student Interface Practice and Training Tests.” Please make certain your child attends school on time and on these dates.
